Leadership And Communication

Organizations run because of people and so do states and countries. In recent times, we have seen various countries emerge as the world powers only because of their leaders and their leadership capabilities. But do leadership capabilities come into a person all by themselves? Are some extra efforts required to become a leader? Can good or poor communication affect your leadership abilities? These questions need to be answered as of now . The following article will deal with these issues and the persona of a great leader, Paul Keating, the 24th Prime Minister of Australia.

The legacy of a true genius
The 24th Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Paul Keating was one of those I admire the most for his communication skills. He came into power in 1991 and completed his full tenure till 1996. The relevance of this true visionary came to being when he became the treasurer in the Hawke Government in 1988. After he acquired the Prime Minister post, he guided his Labor party to one more triumph in 1993 Federal Elections. The party had considered their win a lost one and they had no hope for that, but Paul was the one who led the party to victory. This was one of the most impressive wins of all times for the party as well as for Paul Keating.

Paul Keating defeated Mr. Robert Hawke, his previous employer, with a convincing win. The credibility of the legend had been realized even before he stepped into the shoes of Mr. Hawke. People used to consider him to be more realistic, his thoughts were thought to be more true to the public’s needs and his communication with his cabinet and his public was extraordinary. People used to admire him for his healthy communication and his speaking skills. This can be considered as the main skill that set him apart from the other leaders of that time. Besides, his approach to any problem was also very simple but very effective.

The true worth of good communication skill

This is one of the main skills that govern a person’s abilities to excel. A good communication skill can make a person more confident, realistic and can generate newer ideas in him. Besides, an effective communication is said to take place only if the recipient understands the actual essence of what the speaker is saying. Also, speaking in a language that can easily be understood by all is important. Use of difficult words and tricky vocabulary can not only lead to the listeners not understanding it, but can also make the orator commit several mistakes. Paul was observed to keep his language simple and easily understandable so that it may reach to the masses. The idea behind this entire discussion was to let you understand the true worth of good communication skill.

How is this skill developed?

Good communication skill is not only a property of the higher class. Even the revolutionary leader, Mr. Paul Keating was brought up in not so wealthy family, but managed to achieve his goals- credits to his excellent upbringing and his intent to communicate better. There is nothing which can be said as the best communication mode because as every person in different, so does the mode of communication with him. A true leader is one who understands the manner in which he needs to communicate to different people.

If you demand it, there are some rules that may be followed to develop a good communication skill:

1. Good Thought: Everyone knows that our body is governed by our mind and thoughts and so is our communication skill. Good thoughts lead to the pursuit of knowledge. Gaining extra knowledge will make you more confident in talking to people and thus you may develop good communication skill.
2. Thought Encoding: Thoughts have no limit, but words have. You need to encode your thoughts for your reference, in the best manner possible, in your mind.
3. Decoding: These encoded thoughts then have to be decoded in the most effective manner possible to the listener, so that he may understand the real meaning of what you say. You may be able to encode your thoughts better, but may not replicate them in the manner they are meant to be.

How does communication enhance leadership?

Before coming to this topic, let me briefly describe as to what leadership actually is. “Leader”-this word can even make or break a person’s life. There is no pious thing in this world to stand for someone else. Not all the men God created are equal in virtues, qualities and confidence. Similarly, not all can take a stand for anything wrong that is happening to them, or any right they are being kept away from or even from the commodities of daily life. There is a large chunk of population in this world, and in every country individually as well, who are not getting enough weight age as their other country fellows. A leader is one person, who in himself is aware of all such issues, and who is confident enough to take a stand to deliver these people what their true right are.
